Our
Office has become the
'the place to be' for
the orthodontic treatment of many of the kids
and teens in the Chino Valley area of
Southern California. One look at the relaxed
and pleasant ocean and surfing themed surroundings
and you'll see why. Our
adult patients agree
too! |

Lightning, Our Adopted
Dolphin!
Our office has officially adopted a dolphin named
Lightning. Lightning is a very acrobatic male. He
loves to roam and travels further than the other
dolphins. The large nick at the top of his fin makes
him one of the most distinctive dolphins in the
population. As his name suggests he is a super-fast
swimmer - once he swam the 125 miles between Aberdeen
and Cromarty in five days and he currently holds
the Moray Firth's swimming record for traveling
over 37 miles at a speed of almost 2 miles per hour!
When he is in the inner Moray Firth, he likes to
socialize with other dolphins such as Jigsaw. Here
is his picture: |

Echolocation is a very special skill that
odontocetes use for hunting, keeping track of one
another, searching for predators and 'seeing'
their surroundings. It is rather like the system
bats use to hunt in the dark and involves creating
'sound pictures' by making clicking noises and
listening to the echoes that come back. The amount
of information obtained through echolocation is
astonishing. The time lapse between each click and
its echo enables the whale or dolphin to estimate
how far away an object is; the form of the echo
helps to identify its size and shape; and the
varying strength of the echo provides information
on the direction in which the object is moving.
Even prey hidden under the sand isn't safe because
echolocation is so sophisticated that a dolphin
'see' through the sand and tell the difference
between hidden rocks and hidden fish just by the
type of echo produced. Some researchers have
suggested that bottlenose dolphins can stun their
prey by producing very loud noises.

Anyone can adopt a
dolphin!
It's simple.
Our office contributed money to the Whale and Dolphin
Conservation Society at www.wdcs.org . You can too. In
doing so will made a difference in protecting the
dolphins and whales of the world. This organization is
based in the United Kingdom and is the worldwide voice
for the protection of dolphin, whales, and their
environment. You can also check out more information
about dolphins at www.seaworld.org/infobooks/bottlenose.
I'll give 3 sand dollars to anyone who finds out the
greatest depth that a dolphin has been known to dive
under experimental conditions and the fastest recorded
speed. You can find this on this web site!
They have several important programs such as the
Cruel Seas Program where their experts do research
and produce reports, run campaigns, informs the
public, and attends meetings where the fate of whales
and dolphins is decided. They encourage good whale
watching and dolphin watching operations all over
the world through their Positive Tourism Program.
The Clean and Healthy Seas Program combats environmental
threats such as pollution, plastic debris, over-fishing
and climate change. They even have an Out of the
Blue Whale and Dolphin Adventure Vacations with
sailing trips to the Azores, the spectacular Peninsula
Valdes in Argentina. They have weekend and one week
trips to Moray Firth in Scotland, and treking and
rafting adventures to Nepal. Go to www.bluetravel@wdcs.org
